Bellevue, Wash. - (June 14, 2012) - UltraBac Software, makers of backup and disaster recovery software, announce the release of UltraBac Virtual Disk Utility. The stand alone product creates, and then can update, a native VMware ESX Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK) or a Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) file whenever it is run. This completely eliminates the conversion typically required for a physical-to-virtual (P2V) operation, and automates the process of creating and updating standby virtual machines.
A full backup initially creates a virtual disk file. Subsequent incremental or differential backups include only the changed blocks within protected partitions. These updates are made directly inside the VMDK or VHD file. This means once they have been backed up, very large partitions, or even entire disks, can have their virtual backups quickly updated. Because no processing takes place, a virtual disk file is ready for use as soon as the backup is completed – simply attach the VMDK or VHD and boot for fast disaster recovery.
UltraBac Virtual Disk Utility does not require Hyper-V as it can create a VHD to a local disk or to a UNC path. It also provides Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 users with two special operating system features provided the VHD file is written to local disk. The first feature is the ability to mount the VHD through Windows Explorer with just a couple of clicks of the mouse for quick drag and drop file recoveries. The second key feature, and most important, is users can boot from a local VHD for almost instantaneous disaster recovery.
For VMware users, UltraBac Virtual Disk Utility supports vStorage Thin Provisioning. Users can assign and commit VMDK space on demand. This feature creates virtual disks without provisioning all of the storage required up front. The virtual disk starts small and more space is allocated on demand as the space is used.
"Our goal was to provide physical machines with low cost but highly functional virtual protection" said Morgan Edwards, CEO and founder of UltraBac Software. "UltraBac Virtual Disk Utility can be used for stand alone backup, disaster recovery, and off-site storage. It can also be used concurrently with our UBDR Gold image backup software, or it offers an additional means of protection to existing customer products already in place."
UltraBac Virtual Disk Utility is available now for $695 USD. The price includes first year maintenance and technical support services.
